In the modern travel landscape, the power dynamic has shifted decisively toward the traveler. Whether booking a high-stakes business trip or a long-awaited leisure escape, today’s guests possess more choice and greater influence than at any point in history. Through a proliferation of digital feedback channels, travelers now hold the power to amplify a stellar experience or publicize a service failure with a single click. For hoteliers and Destination Management Organizations (DMOs), the mandate is clear: success in this hyper-competitive era is no longer about simply providing a room; it is about listening, understanding, and anticipating the bespoke needs of every guest.
To navigate this evolution, Amadeus recently concluded our second Travel Dreams research project. By surveying 6,000 frequent travelers alongside key industry stakeholders, we have mapped the shifting topography of hospitality. The findings reveal a clear path forward: the convergence of data intelligence, attribute-based retailing, and generative artificial intelligence is no longer optional—it is the foundation of modern hospitality.
The Core Pillars of Modern Hospitality: A Chronology of Change
The journey toward a more personalized hospitality sector has accelerated rapidly over the last five years. We have moved from the era of "static inventory"—where a room was sold as a commodity—to the era of "dynamic retailing," where the stay is a collection of curated experiences.
- 2020–2022: The Data Awakening. As travel resumed following the global pandemic, hoteliers realized that historical patterns were no longer reliable indicators of future demand. The focus shifted to real-time, forward-looking data.
- 2023–2024: The Integration Phase. The industry recognized that fragmented systems were hindering growth. Investments shifted toward integrating Property Management Systems (PMS) with Central Reservation Systems (CRS) and Business Intelligence tools.
- 2025–2026: The AI Revolution. We have entered the era of "Agentic AI," where technology does not just suggest insights but executes bookings and manages complex guest queries autonomously. Our Travel Dreams 2026 research identifies this period as the tipping point for AI adoption, with virtually every surveyed hotelier planning to integrate AI into their operational core.
Supporting Data: What Travelers and Hoteliers Want
The Travel Dreams 2026 research provides compelling evidence that personalization is the primary driver of modern traveler loyalty.
- The Personalization Demand: A striking 74% of travelers now explicitly state that they want their travel experiences to be personalized.
- The AI Trust Factor: Traveler confidence in AI is surging. The use of chatbots for travel inspiration has tripled in just five years, rising from 6% to 18%. Furthermore, 69% of travelers now express high confidence in AI-generated summaries to make informed purchasing decisions.
- Investment Priorities: Hoteliers are responding with significant capital. Out of 500 hoteliers surveyed, 499 plan to invest in AI in 2026, with an average expenditure of $319,000 per property.
- The Performance Gap: Our pilots show that AI-driven traffic is significantly more likely to convert. AI-driven visitors reach the booking engine at a rate of 44.7%, compared to just 25.9% for traditional organic traffic.
Official Perspective: Orchestrating the AI-Enabled Journey
"We are uniquely positioned to orchestrate the AI-enabled travel ecosystem," says Francisco Pérez-Lozao Rüter. "By connecting suppliers, sellers, and AI assistants to trusted, dynamic travel data at scale, we are moving beyond simple software provision to becoming the connective tissue of the industry."
Amadeus’s strategy is built on a "from insight to execution" philosophy. Through tools like Demand360® and Revenue360®, hoteliers are no longer flying blind. They are utilizing actual booking data—not forecasts—to make real-time pricing and inventory adjustments. With the launch of Amadeus Max for Advisor, the industry is moving toward conversational interfaces where a hotelier can simply ask, "What are the demand trends for business travelers in London this weekend?" and receive an instant, data-driven answer.
Implications for the Industry: The Shift to Attribute-Based Selling
The most significant operational implication for 2026 is the transition to attribute-based selling. Travelers have indicated a clear willingness to pay for specific "add-ons"—such as early check-in, specific room views, or curated local experiences.
Why Attribute-Based Selling Matters
For a mid-sized property, selling room attributes rather than just room categories is a low-cost, high-margin revenue strategy. It allows properties to maximize the value of their existing assets without needing to add a single physical room.
The Technological Enablers
Platforms like the Amadeus Central Reservation System (ACRS) and iHotelier CRS act as the central nervous system for this transformation. By centralizing rates, availability, and distribution, these platforms enable hotels to offer a consistent, personalized retail journey across all touchpoints, whether direct or through third-party aggregators.
Navigating the AI Frontier: GEO and Beyond
As AI reshapes how travelers find hotels, the concept of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is evolving into Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
The New Rules of Visibility
If a traveler asks an AI assistant to "find a quiet, sustainable hotel in Tokyo with a view of the skyline," the hotelier’s primary goal is to ensure their property appears in the resulting summary. Our research shows that 36% of travelers use AI for inspiration, and if a property is invisible to the AI, it is effectively invisible to the guest.
The Amadeus AI Commerce Solution
Amadeus has launched an AI commerce solution specifically designed to address this. It incorporates:
- Performance Manager – AI Search: This tool structures hotel content so that it is easily crawled and understood by generative AI models, effectively boosting the hotel’s "GEO" ranking.
- Agentic Capabilities: We are enabling fully embedded, end-to-end booking within conversational AI flows. This means a guest can complete their entire booking journey without ever leaving the chatbot interface.
- Industry Collaboration: By co-developing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for Lodging with Google and other industry leaders, we are helping to create a standardized language for AI-driven commerce, ensuring that information remains accurate and secure across the entire travel ecosystem.
Conclusion: The Sophisticated Traveler and the Future Ecosystem
The Travel Dreams 2026 report serves as a wake-up call. The era of generic, one-size-fits-all hospitality is over. Today’s travelers are more sophisticated, more demanding, and more reliant on technology than ever before. Their expectations span the entire journey—from the moment of inspiration in an AI chat window to the environmental footprint of their final stay.
For hoteliers and DMOs, the risk of inaction is clear: those who fail to integrate their data, adopt AI strategies, and offer personalized, attribute-based retail options will inevitably be overtaken by competitors who do. The shift toward cloud-based, multi-vendor ecosystems allows for a flexible, agile approach to this challenge.
At Amadeus, our mission is to ensure that our partners are not merely keeping pace with these changes but are actively defining them. By bringing together the industry’s most robust data, most flexible reservation platforms, and the most advanced AI commerce tools, we are helping the hospitality sector turn the complexity of the modern world into a seamless, profitable, and memorable experience for every traveler. The future is not just coming; for those equipped with the right insights and technology, it is already open for business.
